Black Box revisited

Since my last post about Black Box, nVidia has released a new driver. Hurra! This of course did lead to a bit of trouble with the previous, non-nVidia driver but with a lot of help from Yrjan when the computer froze on this end, it all worked out in the end. I would also like to send a bucket full of warm thanks to xerxian at ##otw for informing me of the release.
As I'm well into thanking people and going over the list of fixes, I guess Elya is next. She helped me sort out the plugs for the top-of-the-case audio inputs. I had managed to get the ground plug onto the wrong pin. After enabling the Mic Front Input in KMix, the headset and mic are both working like a charm.
On my old linux box the neverending hacking in the hopes of getting Skype to run left me wishing that the machine would just catch on fire. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, it never did. Thus it was with no little amount of dread I set about the task on this machine. After a bit of reading though I figured I would go for a simple yet forceful approach. As some seem to have experienced problems with the latest .deb package, I downloaded skype_1.1.0.20-1_i386.deb and then installed it with:
dpkg -i --force-architecture skype_1.1.0.20-1_i386.deb
Finally Skype lived up to the slogan "It just works!"
